Cooling Stations in Seattle per King5.com - June 27th 2015

Here is a list of cooling stations courtesy of King5.com. They recommend calling ahead to make sure a/c is on, etc. before you head over to any of these locations.
" With temperatures in the Puget Sound area expected to hit the 90s this week, some cities and counties are offering air-conditioned facilities where people can get away from the heat. Heat waves can be dangerous for vulnerable people, such as the elderly, the very young, or those with other medical conditions that could lead to heat stroke or other problems.
This list will be updated as information becomes available. Check with your local government office for more locations and information.
Seattle
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for Seattle and surrounding areas from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. Here's a look at public spaces that may be used by residents to stay cool in the high temperatures.

REPOST: 30+ WAYS TO KEEP COOL IN HOT WEATHER...

Thought I would repost this post from 2012 since it will be in the 90's around Greater Seattle starting this weekend! Ready to keep cool when it gets HOT, HOT, HOT?!

http://www.aperfectworld.org/clipart/weather/sun16.png

REPOST:

After moving here from the Midwest (via the East Coast!) we were surprised how many homes, apartments and condos didn't have air conditioning. Now after living here for several years we, of course, understood why a/c wasn't important when you only get a handful of 90+ days. (Of course if you are pregnant at the same time, that is another story!)

On those 90+ days, however, it can be a little unbearable. So, some of the things we did during those times (like now) is stocked popsicles in the freezer, took a cool shower and let hair airdry during the day, and discovered some local spray parks. But my favorite discovery was one I heard on the radio here years ago and it really does work.

You open all of the windows at night before you go to bed (if it is safe to do so) and keep them open to let the cool air in. Then before it gets hot and sunny you close all of them as well as all of the shades. The key is to close them between 5 and 6am if possible and 7am at the latest. When I first tried this I couldn't believe how well it worked. Our house is always 10 degrees cooler than outside by doing this. It is really refreshing to come home to a house without a/c that is 75 degrees instead of 85 like outside. (As I write this it is 78 degrees in my house and 89 degrees outside.) I am a person that always prefers it colder than hotter and the excessive sun and heat are no friends of mine.

Other things we do is use electric fans, and on especially hot days, we put a bowl of ice in front of the fan and it works like a mini a/c. I also sleep with a cold wash cloth on my neck or forehead to keep cool. And on days when it is just too hot upstairs we sleep downstairs on the sofabed. It's kinda like a vacation from the bed, a mini-adventure! At least my preschooler thinks so!

I have found 30+ more ways to keep you (even while sleeping) and your home cooler too. So click on the links below to discover more of the ways to beat the heat.

The first one I am going to try is the cold water spray bottle you keep in the fridge!

Don't forget the usual suspects for the kids at home too, like water balloon fights, wet sponge fights or catch, supersoaker fights, sprinklers and kiddie pools.

And if you want to avoid the heat altogether short of going to visit Santa at the North Pole, don't forget to take advantage of the indoor malls, libraries, movie theaters, book stores and the like.

Stay cool!

BRAND NEW FreePlay Kids GROUP on Facebook for Facebook Fans so you can finally see EVERY POST and not miss another fun & free, family event! Plus, a 5000th Twitter post milestone! - See link inside to join my Brand New Facebook GROUP! - June 2015

Update!!

Ok...here is the BRAND NEW Group for FreePlay Kids Facebook fans where you can get a notification for EVERY FREE FAMILY EVENT that I already post on the blog and on the Facebook page. Click on the "Join" button at the link below so you don't miss any more posts every time FB decides to change their algorithms. This is my first time doing a FB group and it is set up as public but I can also change it to a closed group too if you wish. Can't wait to see you in the group! PLEASE SHARE and get the word out!! Also excited to say that this post will forward to twitter and be my 5000th post on my twitter account for FreePlay Kids. That is quite a lot of free, family fun! Please share!!

So, I was thinking about starting a FB GROUP so that all of you can see EVERY free family fun post. FB changes their algorithms ALL THE TIME and even if you pay to boost the posts, which I can only do very rarely, those people eventually don't see the posts anyway every time FB changes the coding. From what I can tell if it is a GROUP...YOU GET A NOTIFICATION ON EVERY POST and that way you don't miss out on any FREE FUN! Shall we give it a go??? If I set it up you will need to request to join the group by hitting the "join" button and then I can accept you. So instead of seeing just 5-10% of posts you will see them all! 100%!! Please share! If we stay healthy and everything in our lives stays calm I am gonna load up all the Greater Seattle freebies fun with lots of advance notice on to the blog and calendar!!!!

Please do share! smile emoticon

All the best,

Holly @ FreePlay Kids

Watch King5 News tonight and see an amazing family that I was blessed to be able to help (behind the scenes!) by sharing their story online!

UPDATED to say I believe the story got bumped due to the tragic earthquake in Nepal. I am sure it will still air as this local story is quite amazing. When it does I will update this post with the King5 News link, in case you miss the airing, so you can see the story online. All the best, Holly :-)

Hey everyone...Check out this story tonight on King5 News. It will air at either 10pm or 11pm...I am not sure which.

It is a beautiful story about 4 little homeless girls who have been living in a car the past 2 years and living on free school breakfasts and lunches and a wonderful couple that has just taken them in and promised them a forever home.

I wanted to help out in the best way I could so I shared their story to a few online sites and I set up a GoFundMe account for them, as well. The local outpouring to help these girls has been amazing. Their GoFundMe page is shown below and if you can please do share it!

Make sure to watch the King5 News tonight and see what an amazing area we live in with the generosity of spirit of those that we call our neighbors!

To see their story (and share it!) on the GoFundMe site go here.

Cheers!

Holly @ FreePlay Kids

2015...My Year of 50 Random Acts of Kindness by Holly Kennedy

Happy New Year !!

In honor of my 50th birthday this month I have decided to do 50 Random Acts of Kindness this year. I have some ideas and will probably have to duplicate some of them but need more...give me some ideas...what do you have?

I have no budget for this so most of these will be accomplished utilizing mostly my time and energy with some monetary ones thrown in here and there like buying someone's coffee, bringing purchased desserts to a nurses station at a hospital, or purchasing small products to donate like small toys for kids  being cared for at an interim shelter or warm socks for the homeless (which I actually did in December), etc.

Throughout the year I will update this post with my RAK and I will use hashtag #HK50RAK on my social media sites.

What would make me happier than anything is if this post made you smile AND inspired you to do random acts of kindness in your community, as well.

As I have posted this adventure on a couple of local community sites to gather ideas, I will be sharing at the bottom of this post ideas presented by the community to give you some ideas too if you get inspired!

I am very grateful that through my "adventures" of 2014 that I have been inspired to do this adventure in 2015!

 HK50RAK 2015 to date:

  1. Jan 2nd Decided to grab bread at Hopelink per their rare surplus announcement for people that couldn't make it/didn't have car and deliver to two of them and hand out the rest to others in the community. (Rare situation and opportunity!)
  2. Jan 5th Bought myself a Coke at McD's then paid for the order belonging to the car behind me.
  3. Jan 5th picked up and dropped off a new little girl's coat that was gifted from one person to another.
  4. January 7th Signed up to help pack kids lunches for the weekend program at LWSD. Pics below of volunteers (at least 30% of which were kids!), Little Guy and Me and the organized packaging line!

  5. January 30th/31st - In honor of Blue Friday, Seahawks and the 12th Man - gifting in a FB gifting group and in a community FB group a brand new, limited, special edition, Seahawks 12th Man Starbucks card loaded with $20 each.
  6. February 5th I decided to fill someone's #iso for a baby by buying what they needed on 425 Shop and Swap. I will be picking the item up on Monday from seller and gonna drop it later in the week to the requester.
  7. Bought 25+ new t-shirts in different sizes from one person to give to someone else that serves food and brings clothes, etc. every single Sunday to the homeless at an organized event. (Love her and her generosity... She inspires all of us!)
  8. February and March: buying new in package toys via Amazon and people with duplicates to give to a children in need's charity this Christmas! (So excited for this one!)
  9. Someone was in need of a couch on one site so I coordinated a free one (plus a matching chair) for them from another site! They asked "our you friends with the gifter?" and I said nope, just doing a random act of kindness. ;-)

  • Pay for coffee of the person behind you
  • Put a gift card in someone's mailbox
  • Buy flowers for someone at a retirement home who doesn't get visitors
